Pico Viejo Crater Circuit

Pico Viejo (3,135 m) is Teide’s older sibling — a shield volcano with a 800-metre-wide summit crater of breathtaking colour. The circuit from Boca Tauce crosses the Montaña de los Tomillos lava field and ascends to the rim of Pico Viejo, with views into both the Pico Viejo and Teide craters. The lava formations along this route — ropes, tubes and aa fields — are extraordinary even by Teide standards.

Unlike the Teide summit trail, this route does not require a permit. However it is at high altitude (2,400–3,135 m) and the terrain is rough. Navigation uses cairns — a GPS track is recommended. The Boca Tauce car park is accessible from the TF-38 road (south side of the park).
