Trail Overview
The classic route to Teide’s summit (3,718 m) starts at the Montaña Blanca car park (2,340 m). The trail climbs through a surreal landscape of pumice and obsidian past the Altavista Refuge (3,270 m). The final 163 m to the true summit requires a free advance permit, limited to 200 hikers per day. On clear mornings the shadow of Teide is cast across Tenerife’s southern coast — a view unique in Europe.
Start before 8 am to avoid summit congestion and the afternoon cloud that often builds from the south. Trekking poles are essential on the loose scree descent. Altitude sickness is a real risk — spend at least one night in Santa Cruz de Tenerife before attempting this route.
Trail Information
Free summit permit required for the section above 3,400 m — book online weeks in advance. Altitude sickness possible above 3,000 m. No shade, intense UV. Weather changes rapidly.
